Yearly Check-ups

By: Sarah McNemar

Summertime is officially here! Time for sunscreen, days at the pool, camps galore, and… yearly check-ups?

While scheduling your child’s yearly check-up may not be at the top of your summertime to-do list, getting your kiddos in for their visit before school starts back is beneficial in so many ways!

Hearing and Vision Checks:

We recommend annual hearing and vision screening for all children > 3 years old. This is especially important for school-age children! Before sending your kids back to school, we want to make sure they can hear their teachers and friends, and nothing has changed with their vision in the past year. Children often don’t notice small changes in vision like adults might. So, having a vision check before school can catch any small changes! Then we can get those eyes working perfectly so they’re ready for the school year!

Vaccine Updates:

We all know that keeping up with standard childhood immunizations helps keep everyone healthy once kids get back together in the classroom! Annual check-ups give us a chance to review any needed vaccines, print records for back-to-school, and talk about other ways to stay healthy once school starts back!

School Medication Forms:

Does your child take a daily medication? Do they need to have it at school with the nurse, or can they keep it with them during the day? We can get these forms filled out before the hustle and bustle of “back to school season” really gets into full swing! We also need to make sure that the doses and medications should be the same for this school year, compared to last school year. So, let’s see your kiddos in the office before school gets going!

504’s, IEPs, Accommodations, and More:

Was last school year a little more challenging for your child than in the past? Do you or the teachers have concerns for ADHD, dyslexia, learning disorders, sensory issues, or other behavioral concerns? It’s best to come in for a discussion and evaluation before the next school year to provide as much support as possible for your child! There are certain things we can diagnose and help with right away at any of our Parkside offices, but if we feel, after talking it through with you, that a deeper evaluation is needed, we can always refer you to one of our amazing Parkside Behavioral Health providers right here in our offices!

We’re here for you all year long—during the sick wintertime season and the *typically* healthier summer months. But getting in for your child’s yearly check-up in the summer is a great way to make sure your family stays healthy and well all year long! See you soon!
